York resident, 88

Verna May Johnson, age 88, longtime York resident, died Thursday, August 18, 2005, at York.

She was born to Rev. Lyle and Rose (Gilliland) Stricklett in Parkinson, SD, and she had 8 siblings.

Verna married Raymond E. Johnson of Sutton, NE, on March 20, 1938, at the Grace Church in Geneva, NE, and they had 5 children. They farmed for 24 years in the McCool Jct. and Polk county areas. They moved to York in 1962 where she resided until recently becoming a resident of Heritage Crossing Nursing Home in Geneva, NE.

Verna ran a daycare for many years and was Grandma to countless children. She cleaned dental offices and York medical offices for a number of years.

She was a member of the Nazarene Church since 1972, and she loved the church and its members. She enjoyed gardening and embroidery work.

Verna is survived by her son Wayne E. and his wife Sharon of Republican City; daughter Faye and her husband Tom Friedli of York, and son Lyle and his wife Rita Johnson of Hooper; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; 4 sisters-in-law and 3 brothers-in-law; several nieces, nephews and friends.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Rev. Lyle and Rose Stricklett, husband Raymond E. Johnson, infant son Eric Lyle, and son Glenn R. Johnson, adopted daughter Ilene Samuelson, and daughter-in-law Karen Johnson, and Verna's 8 siblings.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Monday, August 22, 2005, at the New Life Church of the Nazarene in York with the Reverend Bill Shipman officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in York. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Verna M. Johnson, 88, of York died Thursday, Aug. 18, 2005, at York.

Funeral services were Monday, Aug. 22, at the First Church of the Nazarene in York. Interment was in York’s Greenwood Cemetery.

Verna May Johnson was born in Parkinson, S.D., to the Rev. Lyle and Rose (Gilliland) Stricklett. She was one of nine children.

On March 20, 1938, she married Raymond E. Johnson of Sutton at the Grace Church in Geneva. They farmed for 24 years in the McCool Junction and Polk County areas, and moved to York in 1962. Mrs. Johnson lived in York until recently moving to the Heritage Crossing Nursing Home in Geneva.
