Jack Melvern West, 94, of Grand Island, Nebraska, passed away peacefully on March 30, 2025, at Tabitha Prairie Commons in Grand Island.
Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. on Sunday, April 6, at Campbell Aman Funeral Home in Blair, Nebraska. A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 7, at 9:30 a.m. at Campbell Aman Funeral Home. Interment will be at the Herman Cemetery, Herman, Nebraska followed by a luncheon at the Legion Hall in Herman. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the family for designated repairs at the Herman Cemetery.
Jack was born April 12, 1930, in Herman, Nebraska, to James Melvern and Blandena West. He attended Herman Public School where he met his future bride, Joan Wachter. After graduating in 1947, he attended the University of Nebraska where he studied Chemistry. In 1950, Jack enlisted in the United States Air Force and was stationed in the Office of Special Investigations at the Pentagon in Washington, DC.
Jack and Joan were married on June 17, 1951. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary before her passing in September 2001.
Upon completing his military service in 1955, they moved to Omaha where they were both employed by Mutual of Omaha. In 1959, Jack joined Employers Mutual Company (EMC) in Omaha. Their family moved to Grand Island in 1969 where he continued working for EMC until retiring in 1994.
Jack was a member of the American Legion Post 274 in Herman and The Washington Masonic Lodge in Blair. Jack and Joan were charter members of the First United Methodist Church in Grand Island.
Jack enjoyed Husker football, baseball, photography, fishing, camping with friends and family. But most of all he enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Family members left to cherish his memory include daughter Sherilyn Enck (Bruce Odle) of Grand Island, son Michael West (Denise) of Omaha; Enck grandchildren Stephanie Steinhardt (Adam), Ryan Enck (Jamie), Stacie Forsman (Brett) and Travis Enck; West grandchildren Jenna Golz (Matt), Melia Berkemeier (Franz), and Kim West (Josh Codr); Enck great-grandchildren Asher, Hudson, & Graham Steinhardt, Jacob, Preston, & Benjamin Enck, Mason, Blake, & Bodhi Forsman; West great-grandchildren Harrison, Emily & Taylor Golz, Antonia, Theotokos, Zosia and Stella Maris Berkemeier.
Jack is preceded in death by his parents, James Melvern and Blandena West; his spouse of 50 years, Joan West; and brother, Warren West.
