Richard Lee “Dick” Hansen was born on March 14, 1947, to James and Leona (Johansen) Hansen in Blair, NE. Dick and his brother, Bob, grew up on the family farm north of Blair. He had many great memories with his cousins out on the farms that were owned by his aunts and uncles along Highway 75 north of Blair. He was baptized, confirmed, and married at First Lutheran Church in Blair.

Dick attended school at Cumming City School through the eighth grade. He then began his freshman year at Blair High School. Dick graduated in 1965 and was always active in FFA and 4-H. He always enjoyed getting together with his classmates.

Dick married the love of his life and his high school sweetheart, Lorraine Lorsch, on January 5, 1968. Dick and Lorraine spent their first year of marriage in Germany, as Dick was deployed with the US Army. They were married 53 years before Lorraine passed away November 12, 2021. Born to this union were two daughters, Amie Jo in 1970, and Cynthia Marie in 1975.

Dick was an active member of First Lutheran Church serving as head usher for over 25 years, on the church council, and as a member of the worship and music committee.

Dick was most proud of his career and being a Nebraska State Licensed Land Surveyor, LS#382. He served as an officer for the Professional Surveyors Association of Nebraska, never missing a meeting or conference. Dick and Lorraine had the opportunity to travel to many states to attend conferences. He also served on the Board of Examiners for the State of Nebraska for Registered Land Surveyors.

After high school he worked for a year in the Soil Conservation Service as a surveyor’s assistant. Dick and his cousin Dale joined the U.S. Army on the Buddy System. He served in the U.S. Army for three years as an artillery surveyor in Friedberg, Germany. He achieved the rank of Specialist 5th Class and the title of Battalion Survey Chief when he received his honorary discharge.

Upon his return to Blair, he worked for Stewart A. Smith and Associates, which was later bought by Warren Whitaker and named Whitaker Engineering and Surveying Co. (WESCO). It was later bought by Dick and Lorraine and named Blair Engineering and Surveying Co. (BESCO). In 1990, he was elected to serve as Washington County Surveyor and served for 24 years. Dick was an active volunteer over the years, including surveying and then designing the softball complex for Blair Youth Sports, and assisting with the organization of the annual Relay for Life.

Dick is preceded in death by his infant sister, his parents and wife, Lorraine. He is survived by his children; Amie and Clint Clausen and Cindy and Troy Clausen, all of Blair; Grandchildren: Jolee and Ed Burbach of Randolph, NE, and Jordan and Kiara Clausen, Chase Clausen and Triston Clausen, all of Blair. Great-grandchildren: Anna, Emmett and Ila Burbach; Brother and sister-in-law Robert and Marilyn Hansen of Yankton, SD; Nieces: Kristin, Susan and Kathryn, all of MN; and brother-in-law Roger Lorsch of Blair.

The Surveyor

It isn't mere indifference, in a certain sense it is perhaps even love that drives him on, there's no paradise without its steward

He is happy with his landscape, but even happier with searching, coordinates point him to his invisible spot. The map, not the world, is his utopia.

He wants to know where he is, but it's his consolation to know that the spot where he is standing exists only as his private formula. He is a hole in the shape of a man in the landscape.

With the boundaries that he draws, sharper, more distinct, the grass and the trees grow vaguer and everything that lives, declines and dies.

The world around him is perfectly clear; everything has been observed.

Memorials may be directed to First Lutheran Church in Blair, or the Blair Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department.
