Dr. Sanford M. Rathbun, 80, 1721 Elk Street, Beatrice, Nebraska, died Thursday, January 23, 1992 at his home. He was born February 24, 1911 in Fremont, Nebraska. He graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine in 1939 and entered an Internal Medicine Internship and Residency Program at the University Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. He began his internal medicine practice in Beatrice in June, 1942.

In 1943, he was assigned to the 298th U.S. Army General Hospital in England, and served there and in Europe until December, 1945. Upon returning to Beatrice, he joined the Beatrice Medical Group where he practiced until his retirement in July, 1984.

He was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1948, and was a member of the Nebraska Medical Association and the American Medical Association. He was a member of Christ Church Episcopal and a past vestryman; past member of the Beatrice School Board, the Beatrice Airport Authority and past officer of various medical groups. Survivors: wife, Lillian; daughter, Mary Rathbun of San Diego, California; sons, Kirk Rathbun of La Mesa, California, and John Rathbun and wife Susan of San Diego, California.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary “Mollie” in 1962; parents Grove and Mary (MacArthur) Rathbun, sister, Mrs. Wayne (Jean) Waddell, and a brother, Jack.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel. Memorial established to the Christ Church Foundation and the Beatrice Airport Authority with Bill Boyce in charge.
