John H. Christensen, Dana 1954 died this past Thursday, September 4, 2025 at the age of 93. He was married to Myra Dell Vig, also Dana 1954 and they had 4 children: Mark, Caroline, Paul & Gretchen, all of whom followed their parents to Dana and earned degrees. John lived and worked in California most of his life, teaching elementary school for several years in the Fresno area before being hired to teach psychology and sociology at Taft College in 1966. He eventually taught photography, which was his passion, there for many years. In 1986, he retired with Myra, to Fortuna, CA in among the redwoods of Humboldt County.
In the summer of 1988 John and Myra returned to Dana where John volunteered as an adjunct professor in the Art Department, building a teaching photography studio and darkrooms on the first floor of the south wing of Dana's Old Main. The studio was lost in the Old Main fire that autumn. He later rebuilt a temporary darkroom and studio in the basement theater dressing room of the Performing Arts Center before the north art department addition was added.
John lived the last eight years of his life in San Luis Obispo. He was preceded in death by his wife Myra and his sister and artist/print-maker Marion Christensen, who also was a Dana grad and Blair resident for a time. Memorial services will be held at a later date.
