Eloise “Ellie” Frances Mommsen (Wenger), age 85, died Sunday, February 15, 2026, at Crowell Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 24, at First Lutheran Church in Blair, Nebraska. Interment will follow at the Blair Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, February 23, at Campbell-Aman Funeral Home, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Ellie was born on February 23, 1940, in Annapolis, Maryland, to Jacob Lester and Doris Elizabeth (Chadwick) Wenger. She grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. She earned several degrees, starting with her LPN degree in 1959, her Nursing degree in 1963 from the Lutheran Hospital of Maryland — School of Nursing and later her Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Lincoln in 1979.

She met the love of her life, Nis, at a dance, and they were married on August 12, 1963, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Baltimore. A few weeks later, they moved to Blair, Nebraska, which became their lifelong home, where they raised their two sons, Lester and Christopher.

Ellie had a deep love for nursing and helping others. She worked at Memorial Community Hospital from 1963-1969, and in 1971 she became the Health Occupations Coordinator and School Nurse for Blair High School, a role she faithfully served for 31 years until her retirement in 2002. While raising her two sons, Ellie also cared for countless other children over the years, earning the affectionate title of “Mom” from many students. She ran the MCC (Medical Careers Club) at the high school and touched the lives of many young people, several of whom went on to pursue careers in nursing and other medical professions because of her influence.

Ellie was known for her green thumb and her love of plants, as well as her passion for raising dachshunds. Over the years, she owned 12 dogs and raised multiple litters. She was an avid puzzler, enjoying both jigsaw puzzles and word search books. She collected Hummels from her trips to Germany and later found joy in collecting Barbie dolls to share with her grandchildren. She loved to sew but later became an avid knitter.

She served in various leadership roles with the Washington County Nurses Association, worked as a coordinator for the American Red Cross, and was deeply involved at First Lutheran Church. There, she sang in the choir, served on the hospitality team, acted as the nurse for Vacation Bible School, and volunteered in the church office and made many prayer shawls.

Ellie enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom lovingly knew her as “Oma.”

She is survived by her children and their spouses: Lester (Teresa) Mommsen of Marysville, Washington, and Christopher (Amy) Mommsen of Blair; her sister, Maxine (Robert) Williams; grandchildren Arianne Mommsen and Mark Good, Gaebrielle (Justin) Wieck, Katlyn McConnachie and Michael (Mariah) Mommsen; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews around the world. She is also survived by family friends CJ and Patti Wright.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her sister, Edna Wenger.

Memorials are suggested to First Lutheran Church of Blair, Crowell Home, or the Blair Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department (BVFD).

Services provided by Campbell Aman Funeral Home, 444 S. 17th Street, Blair.
