Meredith Dies After Futile Battle To Save Life

Thirteen blood transfusions, and amputation of affected member

Meredith Stricklett, fifteen-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Stricklett, of this city, passed away last Saturday in an Omaha hospital, where he had received treatment since September 25th. The lad received an injury of the knee last spring, from which he apparently recovered, but later a bone infection set in and he was taken to the hospital, where his case became serious. During his illness, thirteen blood transfusions were given and the injured leg was amputated, but every effort known to medical skill failed.

He leaves, besides the parents, a sister, Norma Jean and a brother, Floyd Junior, his aged grandmother, Edna Gillette and several uncles and aunts.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at two o'clock, from the Methodist Church, with the Reverend R. P. Rasmussen officiating and interment was made in the Blair Cemetery.

Deceased was a junior in the Blair High School and also a past member of the Boy Scouts.

STRICKLETT BOY DIES FOLLOWING LEG AMPUTATION

MEREDITH STRICKLETT, 15, BLAIR HIGH STUDENT, SUCCUMBS

SERVICES HELD AT METHODIST CHURCH

CLASSMATES ARE PALLBEARERS; YOUTH DIED OF BONE DISEASE SATURDAY DESPITE 13 BLOOD TRANSFUSIONS AND AMPUTATION OF LEG.

Thirteen blood transfusions and amputation of his right leg failed to save the life of Meredith Stricklett, 15, son of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Stricklett of this city.

The youth, a junior in Blair high school, died at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at University hospital in Omaha, victim of osteomyelitis, a bone disease which had developed from a bruise. He had been in the hospital since September 25.

He was ill with tetanus in an Omaha hospital last June, shortly after slipping on gravel, and serum was administered to save his life. Physicians, however, said the bone disease was not connected with the previous illness.

The boy’s leg was amputated October 13, when his condition became critical.

Meredith Stricklett was born in Blair June 11, 1922. He was a past member of the Boy Scouts. Surviving him are his parents, a sister, Norma Jean, and a brother, Floyd Jr. His grandmother Mrs. Edna Gillette, and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held at first Methodist church Monday at 3 p.m., the Rev. Ralph P. Rasmussen officiating. The church was filled and members of Meredith’s class were present. Six classmates served as pallbearers. They were Daryl Ladwig, Wesley Wentworth, Gerald Dixon, Hillard Stricklett, Melvin Hewitt and Gifford Moore. Interment was in Blair cemetery.
