Newton Sutherland, 73, retired railroad conductor and long-time resident of Blair, died Sunday at 207 West Colfax Street, where he made his home with his sister, Mrs. Belle Lamb. He had long been ill. The funeral was held 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, at the Bendorf Funeral Home, the Rev. R. E. Ditledess of the First Baptist officiating. Interment following in the Blair Cemetery. Pallbearers were John Sutherland, Everett Lamb, Clyde Sappenfield, Walter Sappenfield, George Hindley and Brian Corbin.

Son of John and Eliza Ann Sutherland, Mr. Sutherland was born at Columbus, Ind. in 1879, and came to Blair at an early age. He was a railroad man most of his life and retired in 1943.

Surviving him are his sister, Mrs. Lamb and three brothers, W. H. Sutherland of San Antonia, Texas, A. J. Sutherland of Blair, and Marion, also known as Snap, Sutherland of Oji, California, one time Washington County Sheriff. Other survivors include twelve nephews and nieces.
