C. Jean Staben, 74

Family was One of her Greatest Passions

Carolyn Jean "Jeanie" Staben, 74, of Missouri Valley, Iowa, died Jan. 5, 2012, at Community Memorial Hospital in Missouri Valley.

Funeral services were Monday, Jan. 9, at the United Methodist Church in Malvern, Iowa. Per Mrs. Staben's request, her body has been cremated and her ashes will be laid to rest at the Malvern Cemetery and the Kennard Cemetery.

Carolyn Jean Holden was born June 10, 1937, in Malvern to Othel "Shorty" and Ruth Victorine "Vicky" Holden. She graduated from Malvern High School in 1955.

On Sept. 24, 1994, she married Clifford "Gene" Staben.

After high school, she helped run the family business, the Wederquist Variety Store, until its closing. She then worked at the Nishna Care Center in Malvern, where she cared for those with disabilities. Her compassion for others led her to a long career at the Glenwood State Hospital School, where she eventually retired. She then worked for nine years as a paraprofessional at the Missouri Valley Schools.

She is remembered as a very giving person and found great pleasure in making sure her students had needed items, such as warm coats and gloves. She loved camping with her husband and family, spending time with friends, dancing, and going to her grandchildren's activities. Her family was one of her greatest passions and it always made her happy to be surrounded by those she loved.

She is survived by her husband, Gene, of Missouri Valley; children and spouses, Kimberly Wederquist Miller and husband, Dr. Gerald Miller, of Alliance, Michael and Carol Wederquist of Malvern, Katrina "Tina" and Shawn Zanders of Coon Rapids, Iowa; stepchildren and spouses, David and Barb Staben of Missouri Valley, Christin and Rory Pruess of Bennington, Sara and Dave Trierweiler and Michael and Sally Staben, all of Woodbine, Iowa; 20 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Donald Rex Holden; and her beloved dog, Tinkerbell.

Hennessey-Aman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
