DONALD C. JEWELL, 75

Donald C. Jewell, 75, died Friday, Dec. 9, 2005, at his home in Leavenworth, Kan. Funeral services were Tuesday, Dec. 13, at the Davis Funeral Chapel in Leavenworth.

Donald C. Jewell was born Nov. 15, 1930, in Bonesteel, S.D., to Charles P. and Helen M. (Berg) Jewell.

The family moved to Fremont in 1938, where he went through school before serving a four-year tour in the Army. In 1953, he became a civilian employee of the Army at Fort Riley, Kan., where he married his wife of 46 years, Jan Hammel. They moved to Mead, then to Fort Leavenworth, Kan., before serving a three-year tour in Japan as logistics inspector.

In 1972, he returned to Fort Leavenworth as chief of purchasing and contracting. While in this position, he was responsible for all government contract actions for the funerals of Presidents Truman and Johnson.

Mr. Jewell retired in 1985 to spend more time with his family. He also golfed, and played cards with his friends at the Little Bar.

He is survived by his wife, Jan; sons and daughters-in-law, Brad G. Jewell, Lee B. and Margie Jewell, Jeffery S. Jewell, and Jay C. and Michelle Jewell; his mother and stepfather, Helen M. and Ralph Brown of Blair; brother, Robert Jewell; two grandsons, seven granddaughters; three great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his father and a son, Chip E. Jewell.
