LEROY H. VOSS, 78

LeRoy H. Voss, 78, of Blair, died Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, March 30 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bennington. Interment will be in the German Cemetery.

LeRoy Henry Voss was born Oct. 29, 1923, to Charles and Anna (Wiese) Voss at their home south of Blair. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bennington.

He attended Sunnyside Grade School and graduated from Blair High School in 1942.

He joined the Army on Feb. 24, 1943, and served with the 149th Combat Engineer Battalion. He was involved in the Normandy, northern France and Rhineland campaigns. He was discharged on Dec. 12, 1945.

After the war, Mr. Voss farmed until 1973. He then worked in the construction industry, and for the last 10 years worked at Kelly Ryan Equipment Co. On June 16, 1973, he married Nettie (Hansen) Callahan.

Mr. Voss enjoyed playing cards, bingo and watching sports. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Blair V.F.W. Post No. 1251, Kennard American Legion Post No. 366, and the Blair Eagles.

He is survived by a stepson and daughter-in-law, Garry and Marcella Callahan of Chadron; three grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, two sisters, Louise Voss of Blair and Gladys Lauritsen of Fremont, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nettie, and a brother, Elmer.

Campbell-Aman Funeral Home in Blair is in charge of arrangements.

LeRoy Henry Voss

LeRoy was born on October 29, 1923 to Charles and Anna (Wiese) Voss at their home south of Blair. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bennington, and was still a member. He attended the Sunnyside Grade school and graduated from Blair High School in 1942. He joined the Army on February 24, 1943 and served with the 149th Combat Engineer Battalion. He was involved in the Normandy, Northern France and Rhineland Campaigns. He was discharged on December 12, 1945.

LeRoy farmed after the war until 1973. He then worked construction and as a groundskeeper at Korshoj’s, and the last ten years he worked at Kelly Ryan Equipment as a night watchman.

On June 16, 1973 he was united in marriage to Nettie (Hansen) Callahan in Omaha, Nebraska. She preceded him in death on July 7, 1996.

LeRoy enjoyed playing cards, bingo, and was a big sports fan, enjoying everything from Little League to pro football. He bowled for many years and enjoyed his friends and the competition. He was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bennington, The Kennard American Legion #366, and the Blair VFW Post #1251. He was a charter member of the Blair Fraternal Order of Eagles #3215, where he was a faithful worker, helping to set up for bingo and serving hamburgers on Tuesdays. He was a big supporter of 4H for over 20 years. He worked at the county fair, parking cars and enjoying all the people.

He is survived by two sisters, Gladys Lauritsen of Fremont, and Louise Voss of Blair, a stepson Garry and wife Marcella Callahan of Chadron, Nebraska, three grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Nettie, and brother, Elmer.

LeRoy had been in failing health for some time but he worked at Kelly Ryan Equipment on Wednesday and Thursday and attended Church on Sunday before entering Immanuel Hospital on Tuesday. He died a week later on March 27, 2002 from numerous health problems.
