Gladys Eagleton, 83

Gladys Marie Eagleton, 83, of Decatur died March 26, 1988, at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa, Iowa, after a lengthy illness.

She was born September 8, 1904, near Craig to James and Laura Johnson.

Gladys graduated from the Craig Public High School in 1922 and attended Midland College at Fremont and the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

She taught school for two years at the Riverside Rural School and one year at the Elm Creek Rural School near Decatur.

Gladys was united in marriage to Gerald B. Eagleton on August 1, 1925.

She worked many years in the Eagleton Department Store in Decatur, owned by her husband and his father, George B. Eagleton.

In 1944, she resumed her teaching career at the Decatur Public Schools until 1951.

In 1952, she was hired as cashier for the Citizens State Bank at Decatur, where she worked until 1972.

Mr. Eagleton died on June 27, 1953.

Gladys was a 51 year member and Past Matron of Tekamah Lodge No. 131, O.E.S. and a longtime member of the United Methodist Church at Decatur.

In her retirement she enjoyed traveling abroad and in the United States.

She was an active member of the United Methodist Women's Society and the O.E.S. Past Worthy Matron Group in Decatur.

Survivors include one son, James E. Eagleton of Decatur; two daughters; Jacqueline M. Maryott of Decatur and Mary Lee Trotter of Sunset, Utah; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Bernice Healea of Tekamah, several nieces and nephews.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, one sister and two grandsons.

Funeral services were held March 29, 1988, at the Decatur United Methodist Church with Rev. Marion H. Knoell officating.

Interment was in the Hillcrest Cemetery at Decatur.

Hamel and Peck Funeral Home in Tekamah handled the arrangements.
