ANNA JOHANNSEN SERVICES HELD

Funeral services for Anna Joens Johannsen were held at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bennington, Nebraska, on Monday, July 22 at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Norman Schroeder officiating.

Organist was Miriam Sukraw. Ken Sukraw sang “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” and “For All the Saints.”

Casket bearers were Richard Kruse, Leroy Tiedje, Dennis Johannsen, Duane Giesselmann, John Dyer and Carl Eggers. Interment was in the German Cemetery with the Hadan-Golden Mortuary in charge of arrangements.

Anna Dorothea Joens Johannsen was born to Hans and Christina (Timpson) Joens on January 13, 1889 in Douglas County. She was baptized into the Christian faith early in her life and confirmed her faith at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Bennington, April 5, 1903. She continued as a dedicated communing member through the years. Her church held a high priority in her life. She was a member of the Ladies Aid and later the Lutheran Church Women.

Anna was united in marriage to John Johannsen on October 16, 1912 in Lincoln, Nebraska by Pastor Walters. John and Anna established themselves on a farm west of Bennington and they continued to live there all their active years. They were parents to three sons and one daughter.

She was preceded in death by her husband on June 20, 1966; a son-in-law, Hershel Dyer; a daughter-in-law, Loretta Johannsen; two brothers, Emil and William Joens; and one sister, Matilda Hansen.

She continued living on the farm until a fall made it necessary to go to the hospital, then to Bergan Mercy Care Center and eventually to the Dodge County Hospital Annex in Fremont, Nebraska.

Anna died unexpectedly on Friday, July 19, at the Dodge County Hospital Annex at the age of 96 years, six months and six days.

She is survived by her children, two sons and daughters-in-law, Leroy and Edna Johannsen of Bennington and Leonard and Myrtle Johannsen of Omaha; one stepson, Chris Johannsen of Fremont; one daughter, Dorothea Dyer of Bennington; one brother, the Reverend Herman Joens of Fremont; grandchildren, Dennis Johannsen of Overland Park, Kansas, John Dyer of Waterloo, Iowa, Mary Dyer of Omaha, and Connie Giesselmann of Doe Run, Missouri; four great grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.

Anna was a tender, loving family-oriented person. She was hospitable and friendly, ready to do kind, charitable deeds. She remained keenly interested in her family, the church, and the community through all her years.

She was preceded in death by her husband on June 20, 1966; a son-in-law, Hershel Dyer; a daughter-in-law, Loretta Johannsen; two brothers, Emil and William Joens; and one sister, Matilda Hansen.
