# 1 - JENS JOHNSON IS BURIED SATURDAY

VETERAN RESIDENT OF THE WASHINGTON COMMUNITY SUCCUMBS AT 74

Jens C. (Jensen) Johnson, 74, retired farmer and long a resident of the village of Washington, died last Wednesday morning after an illness of nearly a year. He had not been in good health since the death of his wife about a year ago, and had been living with his daughter, Mrs. J.T. Christiansen, near Washington most of the time.

Mr. Johnson, whose birth name was Jens C. Jensen, was born near Haslev, on the island of Sjeiland, Denmark, October 16, 1864, and came to the United States as a youth.

He was married April 6, 1889, to Ane Kathrine Andersen and they settled on a farm north of Washington. Three children were born to them, all of whom survive. They are Mrs. Christiansen, Mrs. J.H. Schweekpeper, Jr. of Kennard and Jens C. Johnson, Jr. of Kennard. There are eight grandchildren.

Member of the Lutheran faith since baptism as a child in Denmark, Mr. Johnson was buried at Prairie View Cemetery Saturday afternoon following services at the Washington Community church. The Rev. P.C. Jensen, Kennard Lutheran minister, officiated. The Campbell Mortuary of Blair was in charge.

JENS C. JOHNSON

One of the older residents of the town of Washington, Jens C. Johnson, passed away in death on the morning of March 1st. He had not been well the last ten months, suffering from high blood pressure and other diseases; the death of his wife a year ago added to the ailments of his heart. After her death he spent most of his time at the home, and under the care of his daughter, Mrs. J. T. Christiansen, whose farm adjoins the town.

Mr. Johnson, whose birth name was really Jensen, was born near Haslev on the island of Sjelland, Denmark October 16, 1864. He immigrated to this country when quite young. On April 6, 1889 he was married to Ane Katherine Andersen and settled on a farm north of Washington, Nebraska. Their union was blessed with three children, Mrs. Christiansen, Mrs. J. H. Schweekpeper, Fremont and Jens C. Johnson, Jr., Kennard, who all survive the parents. There are also eight grandchildren.

About 18 years ago Mr. Johnson and wife retired and have since lived in the town of Washington.

Funeral service was conducted by Rev. P. C. Jensen, local pastor Saturday, March 4, at 2 p.m. at the Washington Community church. Mr. James Hansen, Blair, sang several solos. Interment took place at the Prairie View cemetery.
