BERNICE JOHNSON IS BURIED ON MONDAY

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 13, at the Herman Legion Hall for Bernice Johnson, who died Thursday, April 9. Rev. Barbara Schenkel conducted the services.

Bernice Viola Whitmore Johnson was born near McFall, Missouri, on August 3, 1910, to Alonzo Addison and Pearl Giles Whitmore. She moved with her parents to Tekamah, Nebraska, in 1928, and began working at Northwestern Bell Telephone Company at that time.

On August 22, 1939, she married R. Clare Johnson of Herman and they made their home in Herman. She continued to work for the Herman Telephone Company until 1965.

She was a member of the Methodist Church in Herman for over 40 years, becoming a member in 1940. In 1940, she and her husband also became members of the Herman Chapter # 216 of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was worthy matron in 1946, 1967 and 1975. She was an active member of the Herman United Methodist Women, Herman Fireman’s Auxiliary, Washington County Diabetes Association, and the Memorial Community Hospital Auxiliary.

She was living in Herman at the time of her death on Thursday. She and her daughter, Garnet, had been fishing and the Herman Rescue Squad was called to the pond on which they were fishing. She was rushed to the Blair Hospital from the farm pond.

She was preceded in death by her father and her brother.

She is survived by her husband, Clare Johnson, of Herman; and two daughters, Mrs. Janet Pearl Orton of Omaha and Garnet Charrie Johnson of Herman. Three grandchildren, Phyllis Brockmoller of Hendricks, Minnesota, and Jeffrey and Jay Orton of Omaha; and her mother, Pearl Whitmore of the Hooper Care Center in Hooper also survive her.

Hamil & Peck Funeral Home in Tekamah was in charge of arrangements for the services.
