Henry U. “Bud” Gaines, 91

Henry U. “Bud” Gaines, 91 of Arlington died Friday, April 30, 1999, at A. J. Merrick Manor in Fremont. A graveside service will be 11 a.m., Thursday, May 6, at the Arlington Cemetery. The Rev. Lynn Martin and Shirley Schmidt will officiate.

A Masonic Graveside Service will be conducted by Fremont Lodge 15 as a courtesy to Hiram Lodge 52 of Arlington.

A fellowship gathering at the Arlington Community Church will follow the services.

Henry U. Gaines was born Dec. 7, 1907, to Harry and Lillian (Robertson) Gaines in rural Fremont.

He grew up near Arlington and was a 1925 graduate of Arlington High School.

On March 1, 1958, he married Pearl L. Rhoades in David City.

He farmed in the Elkhorn Township most of his life and moved to Arlington upon his retirement in 1972.

He was an over 60 year member of Hiram Masonic Lodge 52, A. F. and A. M. of Arlington and received the bronze Jordan Medal in 1991, presented to members with the most years of membership. He served as Worshipful Master of the Lodge in 1942.

He also belonged to the York Rite Masonic Bodies and Fraternal Order of Eagles 200, both of Fremont.

He is survived by his sister, Winifred Guthrie of Denver, Colo.; grandson, Greg Balfany and his wife, Susan, of Kearney; granddaughter, Kelly Mercer and her husband, Robert, of Norfolk; step-grandson, Phil Pfeiffer and his wife, Tammy of Lincoln; step-granddaughter, Kim Weyhrich and her husband, Dr. Steven Weyhrich of Omaha; four great-grandchildren, Chris and Erick Mercer and Justin and Kaci Balfany; and five step-great-grandchildren, Logan, Cody and Tanner Pfeiffer, and Jesse and Anna Weyhrich.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Pear, who died Feb. 23, 1993; his son, Larry Gaines, and his sister, Bernice DeFord.

Memorials are suggested to the Arlington Community Church in Arlington.

Reckmeyer-Moser Funeral Home in Arlington is in charge of arrangements.
