Fontanelle Native Dies After Lingering Illness

Emma M. Gardiner, 86, a resident at Arbor Manor in Fremont the past two and one half years, passed away last Friday morning after an illness of ten years. A retired librarian for the Nebraska Veterans Hospital in Lincoln, she was born in Fontanelle on March 7, 1895. She held college degrees from Midland Colleges and had a Master’s Degree from Denver University. She married Ray P. Gardiner in 1922, and he passed away in 1931.

Mrs. Gardiner was in veterans’ hospital library work at the veterans’ facilities in Hot Springs, South Dakota and in Portland, Oregon, before coming to the Veterans’ Hospital Library in Lincoln, Nebraska, where she served twenty-five years until her retirement. She also taught in the Valley high schools and was teacher and principal in the Cozad schools before entering a library career. She was a past worthy matron of the Order of Eastern Star in Valley.

She is survived by a sister, Mary Ann Sick at Fremont and a brother, Alfred O. sick of Blair.

Services were held at the Bader-Rozanek Colonial Funeral Home in Fremont Tuesday morning at 10 with Cemetery at Fontanelle. Pallbearers were Ray Harmon, William Steavensen, Alfred Sick, Jr., and William Sick.
