Robert A. Gatewood, 46

Services for Robert A. Gatewood, 46, of Lyons, who died October 6, 1993, at the Norman Heitsheusen farm of rural Oakland, were Saturday, October 9, at the Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church of Lyons. Donald A. Holm officiated. Burial was in the Lyons Cemetery with military graveside services by the Robert Klase Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7998 of Lyons.

Robert A Gatewood was born October 16, 1946, in Oakland, Nebraska, to John Eddie and Rachel Anderson Gatewood. He was baptized at Memorial United Methodist Church in Lyons.

He started school at Edgington School and later went to Jefferson, when the family moved to his Grandpa Anderson’s farm. He graduated from Lyons High School in 1964.

The draft took him into the United States Army in 1966. He served with the First of the 68th Armored Division in Germany for 18 months.

He married Patricia Denton at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oakland May 7, 1966. They had four children, Debbie Lynn, born in 1966; Bradley Allen, born in 1972; Scott Andrew, born in 1974 and Carol, died in infancy in January, 1969.

After his discharge from the Army he lived in Oakland and worked on a farm for a few years. In 1977, they purchased a home in Lyons.

He had worked for the State Department of Roads since 1971.

He was a member of Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church of Lyons and the Robert Klase VFW Post No. 7998 of Lyons.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jack, and a daughter, Carol.

He is survived by his wife, Pat of Fremont; daughter, Debbie (Mrs. Darry) Leffler of Rapid City, South Dakota; a son and daughter-in-law, Bradley and Cheryl of Decatur, Nebraska; a son, Scott of Lyons; his mother, Rachel Gatewood of Lyons; a grandson, Seth of Decatur; sisters, Myrna Johnston of Davis, California; Susie (Mrs. Jerry) Denton of Norfolk, Nebraska; Janell (Mrs. Randy) Carson of Herman and Shirley (Mrs. Robert) of Alexandria, Virginia; and a brother, T. Michael “Mick” Gatewood of Lyons.

Piper Funeral Home of Lyons was in charge of arrangements.
