George R. Edwards, 87

Enjoyed Spending Time With His Grandkids

George R. Edwards, 87, of Blair, died on Monday, April 2, 2012, at Good Shepherd Home in Blair.

Services will be 3 p.m. Friday, April 6, at Campbell-Aman Funeral Chapel. Interment will be in the Blair Cemetery. Visitation will begin Thursday, April 5, at 2 p.m. at Campbell-Aman Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

George R. Edwards was born on January 3, 1925, in Atchison, Kan., to Joseph M. and Lily (Reinert) Edwards. He grew up and graduated from high school in Hiawatha, Kan., in 1942.

In 1943, he joined the Navy and served his country. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He attended Kansas University for one year and then Bemidji State in Minnesota for a year.

He was united in marriage to Bette Countryman on August 21, 1949, in Walker, Minn.

Mr. Edwards later transferred to Maryville, Mo., where he graduated in 1951.

In 1952, the family moved to St. Joseph, Mo. He worked for Conoco Oil there and transferred to Kansas City, Kan., in 1954. He went to work in Salina, Kan. until 1959 when he worked for Champion Oil and moved to Blair. In 1970, he began working for Sun Oil in Atlantic, Iowa. In 1973, he returned to Blair working for Chapman Plumbing and Heating and later for Kelly Ryan until his retirement in 1987.

He enjoyed fishing, barbecuing, and spending time with family, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Bette, of Blair; sons and daughters-in-law, Patrick and Roxanne Edwards of Blair and Michael and Gloria Edwards of Bozeman, Mont.; two sisters, Doris Strickland of Colorado and Claudia Witt of Missouri; brother, Charles Edwards of Missouri; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother.

Memorials may be directed to Odyssey Hospice.
