Emma "Dorothy" Bearden, 90

Taught Shorthand In Her Last Year Of Life

Emma “Dorothy” Bearden, 90, of Alexandria, Va., a Blair area native, died Friday, April 6, 2012, at Mount Vernon Hospital.

Services will be at a later date pending arrangements with Arlington National Cemetery.

Emma Dorothy Jensen was born April 14, 1921, on the family farm west of Blair to Howard and Anna Marie (Stroh) Jensen.

She graduated from Blair High School and worked in Lincoln. After taking a civil service test, she moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked for many years.

She retired from service with the federal government in the early 1980s and continued to work as a reemployed annuitant.

Mrs. Bearden was very active as a volunteer at Mount Vernon Estate and Fort Belvoir’s DeWitt Army Hospital. She volunteered until the age of 89 when her health led her to assisted living at The Fairfax.

Never one to slow down, she taught shorthand to a few of her nurses while there.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Col. Norman C. Bearden; and sister, Lora Hiltabidel.

She is survived by sons, Thomas H. Bearden and Richard H. Bearden; one daughter, Martha B. Quinn; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers, Howard and Jack Jensen; and sister, Edith Rosenbaum.

Demaine Funeral Home in Alexandria, Va., was in charge of arrangements.
