Genoways Sarah Louise

Sarah L. Genoways died Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009, at the St. Elizabeth Regional Medical Center.

Her body will be cremated and there is no visitation. There will be a private memorial at a later date. An inurnment and a gravesite ceremony will also be held at a later date at the Bayard Cemetery.

Sarah Louise Beales was born Oct. 26, 1914, to John Howard and Ella Catherine (Schumacher) Beales, at Fort Calhoun. She attended Fort Calhoun Public Schools and then attended Dana College for one year before beginning teaching in western Nebraska. She married Theodore T. Genoways on July 3, 1937, in Fort Calhoun.

Living in Bayard, she taught for 33 years in schools in the North Platte Valley, including District Schools 42, 58, and 73, and Minatare and McGrew Public Schools, and finally she taught English in Bayard Junior High School from 1964 to 1980. She received her bachelor’s degree from Chadron State College in 1965.

She helped her husband “Ted” with extensive Boy Scout work, and, after his death in 1980, she served as chair of the Scout Committee in Bayard. She remained in Bayard until 1994, moving to Fort Calhoun for 5 years, and then moved to Lincoln, living with her son and daughter-in-law from 1999 until 2009. Most recently, she has resided in Gramercy Hill Retirement Community, and then Waverly Care Center.

? son and daughter-in-law Hugh Howard and Joyce Elaine (Cox) Genoways, and granddaughter, Margaret Louise “Peg” Genoways of Lincoln; grandson, Theodore Howard “Ted” Genoways and wife Mary Anne Andrel of Charlottesville, Va.; great-grandson Charles Jackson “Jack” Genoways of Charlottesville; many nephews and nieces, including Cathy, David, and Douglas Genoways and Susie Newman of Fort Calhoun, Phoebe and her husband Jerry Ziegler of Tekamah, and Mary and her husband Lawrence Scott and Judy Boyd of Blair, Dick Tietz of Nashville, Sharon and her husband Larry Seldon and Ella Harouff of Omaha; and grand-nephews and grand-nieces, including Jeff and his wife Sharon Genoways, Jon and his wife Sydney Genoways, Lynn Genoways, Gene and his wife Jamie Tietz, and Jeremy and his wife Beth Zeigler of Fort Calhoun, Melissa and her husband Ward Ruge of Nashville, and Stephanie and her husband Brad Batenhorst of Omaha; her brother John Howard Beales of Waukegan, Ill., and her sister Elizabeth Coffin of Federal Way, Wash.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother Austin W. Beales and sisters Hannah Beales Genoways, Catharine C. Beales, and Ellen Anne Beales Kanaley; infant son, Theodore Thompson Genoways Jr., and infant daughter, Patricia Louise Genoways.

Memorials are suggested to the Fort Calhoun Presbyterian Church, City of Bayard, for Genoways Hall; or the Frahm House, c/o Washington County Historical Association; or the donor’s choice.
