Richard D. “Dick” Holtman, 86, of Fremont, died Monday, April 30, 2012, at the Fremont Area Medical Center.

A memorial service is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, May 26, 2012, at Nye Square in Fremont. There is no visitation. Interment will be in Memorial Cemetery in Fremont with military honors.

Richard D. “Dick” Holtman was born June 18, 1925, at Fontanelle, to Adolph and Mary (Waterman) Holtman.

He grew up at Fontanelle and attended school there through the 10th grade, and then graduated from Nickerson High School.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from July 25, 1945, to July 9, 1946. After his discharge, he returned to Fontanelle and worked as a mechanic.

He married Joanne Christensen on May 1, 1949, at Salem Lutheran Church at Fontanelle.

Mr. Holtman worked at the Nickerson Coop for three years, and then farmed near Fontanelle for five years.

He then became the rural mail carrier at Arlington from 1957 to 1989, and was the recipient of the Million Mile Safe Driving Award.

He moved to Fremont in 1995.

Mr. Holtman was a member of Hope Lutheran Church at Fremont. He was a charter member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #7419 at Nickerson and life member of the V.F.W. Post #8332 of Arlington.

He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #200 of Fremont, a member and past president of the Golden K. Kiwanis Club at Fremont and was active at the Fremont Friendship Center. He held all offices in the Nebraska Rural Letter Carriers Association.

He is survived by his wife, Joanne; daughters and sons-in-law, Pamela and Phillip Mellegaard of Overland Park, Kan., and Michelle and Eric Hoffman of Fort Wayne, Ind.; son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Kathleen Holtman of Oak Run, Ill.; sister, Anita Nelson of Fremont; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan K. Hokamp.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the family for a memorial yet to be established.

Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont was in charge of arrangements.
