Howard F. Gilbert, 72, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998, at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs.

Services and burial were private.

Mr. Gilbert was born in Decatur, Neb. He served as a medic with the U. S. Navy during World War II and was at Pearl Harbor. He was a truck driver.

He is survived by a son, David Gilbert of Seattle, Wash.; three grandsons; four sisters, Thelma Smith of Rosamond, Calif.; Joyce Donaldson of Bremerton, Wash.; Delores Baker of Council Bluffs and Carol Morris of Las Vegas, Nev.; and five brothers, Wayne Gilbert of Dallas, Tex.; Leon Gilbert of Springfield, Neb.; Ronald Gilbert of Macedonia, Iowa; Gerald Gilbert of Council Bluffs and Garry Gilbert of Tucson, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rachel in 1958; a son, Michael Gilbert and a brother, Leland Gilbert.

McCurdy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
