SERVICES HELD FOR ROY A. BROWN

Roy A. Brown, a businessman who enjoyed playing golf, died of natural causes Sunday at Crowell Memorial Home in Blair, Neb. He was 90.

Brown was born in Alliance, Neb., and grew up in south Omaha.

In 1936, he married Lois Burke. They had one child, Tim Brown.

The family lived in Omaha until 1947, then moved to Blair, where Brown was a partner in the company Gaydou and Brown Hatchery and Field Meal.

Lois Brown worked with her husband doing office work for the company, said Lu Brown, the couple’s daughter-in-law. Roy Brown was a member of the National Poultry Growers Association.

In the late 1960s, Brown was no longer a partner in the hatchery and became the Blair city administrator.

Brown made an unsuccessful bid for state senator in 1972. In 1978, he co-founded and operated Blair’s first radio station, KBWH.

Brown was a president of the Blair City Council and Rotary Club and a member of the Lions Club.

Other survivors include four grandchildren and a sister, Virginia Lyle of McCook, Neb.

Funeral services were held Wednesday.

ROY A. BROWN, 90

Roy A. Brown, 90, of Blair, died Sunday, May 25, 2003, at Crowell Memorial Home in Blair, where he had been a resident for the past four years.

Funeral services were held May 28 at Country Bible Church in Blair. Interment was in the Blair Cemetery.

Roy Arthur Brown was born July 4, 1912, in Alliance to Earl and Anna (Christensen) Brown. He lived in Alliance until moving to Omaha in 1915.

He attended Bancroft School in South Omaha and graduated with honors from South High School in 1931. He was married to Lois Burke in 1936. He worked for Safeway Stores through World War II as the head of an egg-breaking plant that powdered eggs for K-Rations.

He moved to Blair and became a partner in the Gaydou and Brown Hatchery and Feed Mill in 1947. In the late 1960s, he became Blair’s first city administrator. After retiring from the city, he helped found KBWH, Blair’s first radio station, which operated in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Over the years Mr. Brown served as the president of the Blair City Council, the Blair Rotary Club and the Lions Club. He was a member of the Nebraska Planning and Zoning Association, as well as the National Poultry Producers Association.

In his early years he was an active member of Grace Baptist Church in Omaha. While in Blair he attended First Baptist Church and for the past 15 years, was a member, teacher and elder at Country Bible Church. He enjoyed golfing, and faithfully attended all sporting events and school activities that involved his grandchildren.

He was a man of many maxims and “Saved to serve” was one of them. His godly example, his servant heart and sacrificial giving of his time and energy to his grandchildren will always be cherished by his family.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Lu Brown of Blair; three grandsons and one granddaughter; and three great-granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Lois.
