Recent Fort Calhoun grad killed in accident

Christian Skwarek loved all things having to do with sports, especially the Nebraska Cornhuskers. He was also an active high school student, playing football and basketball and performing in the show choir.

Skwarek, 18, who graduated from Fort Calhoun High School last month, died in a one-car accident on June 2, south of Pender near the intersection of High 9 and W Road.

According to the report from the Cumming County Sheriff’s Office, Skwarek was driving northbound when his vehicle crossed the southbound lane of Highway 9, struck a guardrail and left the roadway. The accident was not discovered until the following morning. Pender Fire and Rescue and the Thurston County Sheriff’s office responded to the accident.

Funeral services were Friday, June 8, in Omaha.

Principal Jerry Green said Skwarek came to Fort Calhoun High School during the second semester of his sophomore year. He previously attended Millard West High School and Boys Town High School. “He was a typical high school kid,” Green said. “He had a lot of friends and was active in sports and other activities.”

A member of St. Thomas Lutheran Church in Omaha, he also participated in youth activities.

Green said a crisis team was made available to students and staff following the accident.

An autopsy was conducted and the accident remains under investigation by the Cumming County Sheriff’s Office.

Skwarek is survived by his father and step-mother, Ron and Patty Skwarek; brother, Nate Skwarek; grandmother, Ella Mae Victor.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Neldene; grandfather, Arnold Victor; grandparents Ed and Silva Skwarek; step-grandparents Marvin and LaVerna Benne; and Mervin and Rosemary Drieling.

Memorials are suggested to the Nebraska Children’s Home.
