Charles E. Andersen, 78, of Arlington, died Saturday, July 26, 2003, at Fremont Area Medical Center.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 29, at Arlington Community Church with the Rev. Don Stoebner officiating. Visitation began Monday, but will also be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Military graveside services will be conducted by members of V.F.W. Post No. 8332 and American Legion Post No. 71, both of Arlington. Interment will be in the Arlington Cemetery.

Charles E. "Pete" Andersen was born Aug. 4, 1924, on a farm near Valley to Arthur and Eva (Merryweather) Andersen.

He grew up in rural Valley and attended rural school in Douglas County. He was a 1941 graduate of Valley High School and attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln for one year, where he studied engineering.

He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II, serving from Dec. 7, 1942, until Oct. 4, 1945, and served in the Pacific Theater. After his discharge, he farmed south of Arlington for 43 years, retiring in 1989. He moved to Arlington in 1995.

On May 27, 1945, he married Marjorie Gifford at the First Congregational Church in Arlington.

Mr. Andersen was a member of the Arlington Community Church, V.F.W. Post No. 8332, and American Legion Post No. 71, all of Arlington; he was a member for more than 50 years of the Victory Masonic Lodge No. 310 A.F. & A.M. of Valley.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; three daughters and their spouses, Judy Andersen of Suffern, N.Y., Jayne and Paul Stranghoener of Arlington, and Carolyn Andersen and Dan Hoppes of Fremont; brother and sister-in-law, John and Mona Andersen of Bellingham, Wash.; brother-in-law and wife, Don and Fern Gifford of Fremont; sister-in-law and husband, Ruby and Charles House of Arlington; special family friend, Barbara McCole of Suffern, N.Y.; eight grandchildren and their spouses; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and good friends.

Memorials are suggested to Masonic Eastern Star Home for Children at Fremont, or the Fremont Area Medical Center Foundation.

Reckmeyer-Moser Funeral Home in Arlington is in charge of arrangements.
