Meta C. Gnuse, 89, of Arlington, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, north of Arlington. The Rev. Dennis Maaske will officiate. Interment will be at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery.

Meta C. Gnuse was born Oct. 16, 1911, in rural Arlington to William and Lena (Hilgenkamp) Scheer. She grew up in rural Arlington.

Following her marriage on Sept. 25, 1932, to Edward Gnuse at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, the couple lived on a farm northeast of Arlington. In 1963, the couple moved into Arlington.

Mrs. Gnuse had worked at the former Freddie’s Café in Arlington for five years, and then was employed as a cook for the Arlington Public Schools for 15 years.

She is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Lois Gnuse of Blair, Gene and Clarice Gnuse of Bella Vista, Ark., Robert and Ruth Gnuse of Arlington, and Eldon and Gloria Gnuse of Ashland, a brother and sister-in-law, Gilbert and Margaret Scheer of Arlington, two sisters, Dorothea Hilgenkamp and Clara Westermann, both of Arlington, 13 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward, a sister, Hulda Scheer, and a grandson, Troy Gnuse.

Memorials are suggested to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

Meta Caroline Gnuse, the daughter of William and Lena (Hilgenkamp) Scheer, was born October 16, 1911, at rural Arlington, Nebraska. She grew up at rural Arlington. She married Edward W. Gnuse on September 25, 1932, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, north of Arlington. The couple lived on a farm northeast of Arlington, where they farmed until moving into Arlington in 1963. Meta worked at the former Freddie’s Café in Arlington for 5 years and then was employed as a cook for the Arlington Public School for 15 years.

She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at rural Arlington and a member of St. Paul’s Women’s League and sang in the church choir for 25 years.

Meta passed from this life on Friday, January 26, 2001, at Memorial Community Hospital at Blair, Nebraska, at the age of 89 years, 3 months and 10 days. She is survived by 4 sons & daughters-in-law, Donald & Lois Gnuse of Blair, Gene & Clarice Gnuse of Bella Vista, Arkansas, Robert & Ruth Gnuse of Arlington and Eldon & Gloria Gnuse of Ashland; brother & sister-in-law, Gilbert & Margaret Scheer of Arlington; 2 sisters, Dorothea Hilgenkamp and Clara Westermann both of Arlington; 13 grandchildren & 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, who died September 1, 2000; sister, Hulda Scheer; and grandson, Troy Gnuse.
