Victor J. Goerke, 86, of Blair, died Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008, at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair.

A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 28, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Scottsbluff.

Victor Jean Goerke was born Oct. 24, 1922, in Burr to Victor and Sidona Goerke. He grew up and received his education in Burr, graduating from high school with the Class of 1939.

He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II, entering the service in July 1943 and resigning in June 1946 as a Lt. JG. Upon his return, he resumed his studies at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, graduating in August 1947.

On May 29, 1948, he married Maxine Shearon in Nashua, Iowa. In 1953, the couple moved to Scottsbluff, where Mr. Goerke worked as a certified public accountant. He was a longtime member of the American Institute of CPAs and the Nebraska Society of CPSs.

He was devoted to his family and was an avid golfer and sports fan, especially cheering for the Huskers and the New York Yankees. He was involved in developing and promoting a youth baseball program in Scottsbluff. He was also active in the Rotary Club, the Elks Club and the Scottsbluff Economic Development Board, and participated in various church activities, including the St. Agnes School Advisory Board.

His wife died after 53 years of marriage, and in 2005, Mr. Goerke moved to Blair.

He is survived by six children and their spouses, Greg and Barb Goerke of Scottsbluff, Vicky and Bob Wittry of Blair, Brad and Michele Goerke of Austin, Texas, Brian and Michaela Goerke of Omaha, Sandra and Mike Delsing of Kennesaw, Ga., and Tom and Kari Goerke of Denver, Colo.; 20 grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers and sisters-in-law; and an infant son, Victor.

Campbell-Aman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
