Alberta B. Strom, 90, of Fremont, formerly of Tekamah and Oakland, died Friday, April 13, 2012, at her home in Shalimar Gardens in Fremont.

She was born June 16, 1921, in Phillipsburg, Mo., to Loran Levi and Mabel Irene (Prosser) Layman. Her parents relocated east of Herman. She attended Kindred, Bono and Pleasant View public schools. At 14 years of age, her family moved west of Herman where she then attended Hillcreek and Herman Public High School.

She married Sherman E. Carlson on Nov. 5, 1939, and after briefly living in Battle Creek, they relocated to Tekamah, where she lived until her husband’s death on April 25, 1973. During her marriage to Sherman, she was very active at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Tekamah where she taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school for 20 years and participated in the Altar Guild.

She married Glenn N. Strom on Sept. 14, 1974. In Oakland, Glenn and Alberta showed several civic interests, including helping start the Swingaway Square Dance Club with Harold Bausch as caller and square-danced for 14 years. As a fundraiser, they gathered and sold empty pop cans and donated the money they received to “Dogs for the Deaf.” Additionally, they helped start the local Wheelin’ Sams (Good Sam Club). Glenn died Feb. 7, 2004.

Survivors include: four children, Doris Jean (Carlson) (and husband, Sam L.) Edwards, of Pasadena, Texas, Shirley Marie (Carlson) (and husband, Bob J.) Wilson, of Sweet Home, Ore., Terry Sherman Carlson (and wife, Cynthia A. (Hartshorn) Carlson) of Wichita, Kan., and Sonja Lynn (Carlson) (and husband, Kenneth J.) Feather of Waco; a brother, Wilber Layman of Billings, Mont.; sisters, Juanita Pendergraft of Lebanon, Mo., Lena Jensen of Blair, and Florence W. Crowder of Perry, Ga.; three stepchildren, Mary Ann (Strom) (and husband, Arlan) Hansen of Blair, Barbara (Strom) (and husband, Gale) Mahnke of Elgin and Richard Strom (and wife, Mary (Lindstrom) Strom); stepdaughter-in-law, Vanessa (Beck) (Mrs. Mark) Strom of Oakland; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by a brother, two stepsons and a step-grandson.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Tekamah with the Rev. Travis Borkosky officiating. Visitation will be from 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday at Pelan Funeral Home in Tekamah. Visitation will continue one hour prior to service time Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Tekamah Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent in care of the funeral home and will be given to a charity in Alberta’s name at the family’s direction.
