Rites For Mrs. Mattie Noble To Be Held Today

Long-Time Blair Resident, 75, Succumbed In Idaho Tuesday

Had Spent Winter In Western State

Prominent Blair Woman Came Here When A Small Girl, in 1877; Body Arrived Here Wednesday, Rites To Be At Episcopal Church

Blair residents were grieved Tuesday to learn of the death that day in Caldwell, Idaho, of Mrs. Mattie Noble, 75, of this city who had been spending the winter there with her daughter. Mrs. Noble had broken her leg in a fall there about Thanksgiving time, and had since spent intermittent periods in a hospital at Caldwell.

The body was transported to Fremont Wednesday evening on the Gold Coast Limited train, and was then brought to Blair, where funeral services will be conducted this afternoon at 2:00 o’clock from St. Mary’s Episcopal Church with Rev. William H. J. Petter of Plattsmouth officiating. Interment will be in the Blair Cemetery.

Native of Kentucky

Mrs. Noble was born in Newport, Kentucky, February 25, 1880, dying one day after the anniversary of her 75th birthday. With her parents she came in 1873 to Washington County, Nebraska, when a girl about 13 years of age. They were passengers on a train from Kentucky, but as there was then no railroad bridge over the river east of Blair, the train was carried across that stream on one of the old-time train ferries.

For a time the family resided near DeSoto, but later they moved to a farm home then located on the site of the present George Wilson farm southeast of the city.

Married in 1877

After attending the Blair schools, she was married in October, 1877, to J. W. Mayle, one of the leading early day business men of the city. He built the three story Mayle building at Washington Street and Walker Avenue. For many years Mr. and Mrs. Mayle operated a confectionery store in the location of the former H. J. Codlfe? Store.

Mr. Mayle died in 1908. A few years later his widow was married to Herbert T. Noble of this city. Mr. Noble died about twenty years ago, since which time she has resided on west South Street.

Surviving Mrs. Noble are three daughters: Mrs. M. R. Lippincott of this city, Mrs. F. G. Hoffman of Caldwell, Idaho, and Mrs. A. J. Tompkins of Boise, Idaho; one son Fred Mayle, of Blair; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Another daughter, Mrs. George Thomas, died only recently.

Mrs. Tompkins accompanied the body of her mother to Blair, and will be here for the services this afternoon. A niece of Mrs. Noble, Mrs. John Ahern of Wayne, and a nephew, J. V. Thorndike of Omaha, will also be here for the last rites.

Pallbearers will be E.W. Schmidt, James Cruickshank, William Quinlan, Frank Schafer, J. H. Grimm and Guy Cook.

MRS. MATTIE NOBLE DIES IN IDAHO

Funeral Services Held in Blair this Afternoon at Episcopal Church

Mrs. Mattie Noble, well known resident of Blair for the past 62 years, died Tuesday afternoon, February 26, at a Caldwell, Idaho hospital where she had been confined a greater part of the time since shortly before Thanksgiving day when she fell and broke her leg.

Grief over the death of her daughter, Mrs. George Thomas, three months ago, coupled with the shock of the accident, is believed to have been responsible for her death. For several weeks preceding Mrs. Noble’s death, she had gradually grown weaker. She was 75 years old at the time of her death.

Funeral services were held this Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock from St. Mary’s Episcopal church with Rev. William J. H. Petter of Plattsmouth officiating. Burial was made in the local cemetery. Pallbearers were E. W. Schmidt, William Quinlan, James Cruickshank, Frank Schafer, J. H. Grimm and Guy Cook, all old time friends of the deceased.

Mrs. Noble was born on February 25 at Newport, Kentucky, her death having occurred on her birth anniversary. With her parents she came to Nebraska and Washington county in 1873 at the age of thirteen, and had lived in this vicinity practically all the time since then.

She was married to J. W. Mayle in October, 1877 at Blair, and for many years she assisted her husband in conducting a confectionery store on Main street, Mr. Mayle having built the building formerly occupied by Hugh J. Cooke. Mr. Mayle died in 1908 in March, and his widow later married H. T. Noble, who also passed away several years ago.

Of a happy and jovial disposition, Mrs. Noble had hundreds of friends in Blair vicinity who mourn her death and who extend to the children their deepest sympathy.

Surviving Mrs. Noble are four children, Mrs. F. G. Hoffman of Caldwell, Idaho; Mrs. A. J. Tompkins of Boise, Idaho; Mrs. M. R. Lippincott and Fred Mayle, both of Blair. Also surviving is a sister, Mrs. J. S. Thorndyke of Long Beach, California and an aged brother, John A. McCloud of Newport, Kentucky. Mrs. Noble has six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Tompkins accompanied the body of her mother back to Blair, arriving in Fremont Wednesday evening and being brought here by J. E. Campbell. Present at the funeral services were also a niece and nephew of Mrs. Noble, Mrs. John Ahern of Wayne and J. V. Thorndike of Omaha.
