Died on 10/8/2005

Emma C. Andersen, 90, of Detroit Lakes, Minn., died Saturday, Oct. 8, 2005, at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. A private family service is planned.

Emma Christine Svendgaard was born Jan. 31, 1915, at Kennard. After her mother, Anna Marie (Madsen) Svendgaard died of the German influenza in March of 1919, her father, Soren Svendgaard, attempted to raise the four children; the two younger children had to be cared for by their grandmothers and other relatives.

In 1934, she married Leon David (Honny) Andersen in Blair. They moved to Omaha where her husband was with the Omaha Police Department. They purchased the Hilltop Grocery at 30th and Seward Street in 1948.

In 1958, they purchased a resort on Rush Lake in Ottertail County, Minn., running it in the summer and spending the winters in Arizona. When they retired, they lived on the Ottertail River by Rush Lake, Minn., then moved to Arizona full-time.

Mrs. Andersen returned to Minnesota in 2004 and stayed with her son until she entered the nursing home.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Donna Andersen of Ottertail, Minn.; daughters and sons-in-law, Anna and Bob Travelstead of Bothel, Wash., and Carolyn and Bob Morrow of Mesa, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Norma Fattig of St. Joseph, Mo., and Clair Tornatore of Green Valley, Ariz.; brother, Maynard Svendgaard of Washington State.

She was preceded in death by her husband, in 1996; stepmother, Goldie Svendgaard; three brothers, Woodrow, Gerald and Bill; and two sisters, Helen Sorenson and Louise Anderson.
