John W. Sutherland, 87

Services for John W. Sutherland, 87, of Fremont and a former long-time resident of Blair, who died January 10, 1996, in Fremont, are 2 p.m. Friday, January 12, at St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church, 538 W. 16th Street in Fremont. Open graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m. in the Blair Cemetery.

The family will be receiving friends at a reception at the Blair American Legion Lounge following graveside services.

Among his survivors are sons, John “Burley” Sutherland, Jr., Max, Nebraska; Cliff Sutherland of Omaha; Darwin Sutherland of Blair and Richard Sutherland of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; a daughter, Roxann Edwards of Blair; grandchildren and other family members.

Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont is in charge of arrangements.

Services were Friday, January 12 at St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Fremont for John W. Sutherland, 87 of Fremont and formerly of Blair who died January 10, 1996 at Memorial Hospital of Dodge County in Fremont. REv. Dana Mark officiated. Burial was in the Blair cemetery.

John W. Sutherland was born May 12, 1908 at Blair. He attended Sutherland School in rural Blair and was a graduate of Blair High School.

He worked at the Martin Bomber Plant during World War II and then worked as a machinist for American Road Equipment in Omaha. He later worked for Kelly Ryan Equipment at Blair. After he retired in 1974, he worked as a dispatcher for the Washington County Sheriff's Department.

He was a member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Fremont; Lutheran Brotherhood; Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 200; the R.E.A.C. of Fremont; and was a former member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Blair.

He married Thelma Taylor July 20, 1928 at Blue Springs, Nebraska. She preceded him in death March 30, 1975.

He married Arlene E. Hull Behrens November 9, 1985 at Fremont.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Abram and Bertha McCoy Sutherland; his first wife, Thelma; a brother, Hugh and a grandson, Joseph.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene; sons and daughters-in-law, John W. J. and Lylia of Max, Nebraska; Cliff and Beth of Omaha; Dar and Lisa of Blair; and Dick and Marlene of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; a daughter and son-in-law, Roxann and Patrick Edwards of Blair; a step-daughter and stepson-in-law, Janet and Dan Mangelsdorf of Central City, Colorado; 19 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were John W. Sutherland Jr, Cliff Sutherland, Dar Sutherland and Dick Sutherland.

Honorary pallbearers were Patrick Edwards, Brock Edwards, Cass Sutherland, Tim Sutherland, Calvin Sutherland, and Ty Sutherland.

Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont was in charge of arrangements.

The funeral for John W. Sutherland, 87, of Fremont, formerly of Blair, will be 2 p.m. Friday at St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Fremont.

He died Wednesday Jan. 10, 1996, at Memorial Hospital of Dodge County in Fremont.

Sutherland was born May 12, 1908, in Blair. He attended Sutherland School in rural Blair and was a graduate of Blair High School. He married Thelma Taylor July 20, 1928, in Blue Springs. He was a member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Fremont, Lutheran Brotherhood, Fraternal Order of Eagles 200, the R.E.A.C. of Fremont, and was a former member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Blair.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, John Jr. of Max, Cliff of Omaha, Dar of Blair and Dick of Sioux Falls, S.D.; a daughter, Roxann (Mrs. Patrick) Edwards of Blair; a stepdaughter, Janet (Mrs. Dan) Mangelsdorf of Central City, Colo.; 19 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by a brother and a grandson.

The Rev. Dana Mark will officiate Friday’s service. Visitation is in progress until 9 tonight at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont and one hour prior to Friday’s service at the church. A graveside service will be 3:30 p.m. Friday at Blair Cemetery.
