Verl I. Scott, 81, of Lincoln, died Thursday, July 12, 2012.

A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 17, at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, 6800 S. 14th St., Lincoln. Visitation will be Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. with family greeting friends from 7 to 8 p.m.

Verl Irven Scott was born July 10, 1931, to Almon and Vera Scott in Mitchell. He graduated from Mitchell High School in 1949. He attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln where he played football and participated in the ROTC program. He played linebacker for the Cornhusker football team and was a three-year letterman. He received All Big 7 honors in 1952. He also was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.

He married Helen Hatcliff and the couple was married for nearly 54 years.

Mr. Scott taught and coached in Seward in 1958, and later served as their principal and superintendent of schools.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; daughters and sons-in-law, Sheri and Doug Dawson of Lincoln and Stacy and Russ Nelsen of Blair and Dr. Michael O’Meara of Indianola, Iowa; six grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Helen Scott of Mitchell; nieces and nephews and their families; many friends, teammates and colleagues.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Shelley Scott O’Meara.

Memorials may be directed to the family for a future scholarship fund at Seward High School and the Husker Power Athletic Club.
