Dr. Robert J. Foley, 87

Dr. Robert J. Foley, 87, died July 28, 2010, in Tyndall, S.D. Funeral services were Aug. 3 at St. Leo's Catholic Church in Tyndall; interment was in St. Leo's Cemetery.

Robert J. Foley was born April 13, 1923, to Robert and Alma Foley of rural Blair.

He attended Blair High School and Dana College and received his medical degree from the University of Nebraska. After graduating from medical school, he practiced medicine with Dr. C.D. Howard at the Blair Clinic before entering the United States Navy.

For two years, he served on the staff at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Pensacola, Fla. Upon his discharge from the military, he set up his medical practice in Tyndall. He was the only doctor in Tyndall for many years, and was loved and admired by all in the community.

He was recognized for his 50-plus continuous years of service by the South Dakota State Medical Association. During this time, he served on the clinical faculty of the University of South Dakota School of Medicine, the South Dakota Medical Association Legislative Commission, and the Yankton District Medical Association.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; six sons, Robert, Don, Steve, Jeff , Scott and Shawn; and one daughter, Elizabeth (four of his children are also involved in the medical field); 11 grandchildren; three brothers and a sister, John, Janet, and Jim Foley of Blair and Jerry Foley of Omaha.
