Killed By The Cars

Horrible Death of S. H. Woolworth, of LeMars

LeMars, Ia., Nov. 2 – S. H. Woolworth, of this city, met his death at 3 p.m. Monday, in a horrible manner, at the Sixth Street crossing of the railway tracks. It appears that Woolworth and another man attempted to cross the track under a freight car. One of the men passed through safely, but as Woolworth made the attempt the train started to back in on the Illinois Central sidetrack and Woolworth was caught under the wheels and frightfully mangled. The arms were both cut off. The body was terribly mutilated and the intestines were scattered along the track.

The deceased leaves a wife and eight children and was an old soldier, a harness maker by trade. Coroner Duer held the inquest at the city council rooms this morning at 9 o’clock. No blame was attached to the trainmen or railroad company.

Another railway accident happened near Sibley yesterday in which Ed Leaherty, a brother of Wm. Leaherty of this city was killed by a special knocking a handcar from the track.
