Charles Veit, 76, Dies From Diabetes

Charles A. Veit was a selfless man who put the needs of others before his own.

When Veit’s father became ill and unable to work, he left high school after two years to work on various farms in Odebolt, Iowa, to help support his eight siblings.

“He was always providing for others,” said daughter Rebecca Holt of Omaha. “He cared very deeply for everyone he knew”.

Veit, a retired foreman with the Omaha Public Works Department, died Wednesday at Began Mercy Medical Center of complications from diabetes. He was 76.

A graveside and honor guard by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2503 were held Friday at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Veit was born near Wall Lake, Iowa.

In World War II, he was a heavy gunner with the Army’s 104th Timberwolf Division, which specialized in nighttime fighting. Veit fought in France and Germany, winning two Bronze Stars.

He came to Omaha in 1955. Veit and Georgena Simmons were married April 28, 1968.

Veit was a temporary worked for the Public Works Department for two years before becoming full-time in 1967. He retired in 1990.

Veit’s survivors also include his wife; daughter, Sharon Peterson of Blythe, Calif.; brother Albert Veit of Ute, Iowa; sisters Celestine Sigler of Omaha, Veronica Hewitt of Washington, N. C., Joann Van Camp of Hayward, Calif., and Clarissa Veit, Agnes Sporleder and Theresa Soyer, all of Carroll, Iowa; three step-children; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
