Bernice E. Grosse, 87

Bernice E. Grosse, 87, of Cedar Bluffs, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009, at the Fremont Area Medical Center.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 9, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Cedar Bluffs. Interment will be at Fremont’s Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, at Moser Memorial Chapel in Cedar Bluffs, with the family receiving friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Friday, one hour prior to services.

Bernice E. Wehmeyer was born June 28, 1922, in Arlington to Walter and Elma (Hilgenkamp) Wehmeyer. She grew up on a farm near Arlington, attended St. Paul’s Lutheran School, and was a 1940 graduate of Arlington High School.

She was baptized on July 9, 1922, and confirmed April 15, 1936, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

She worked as a waitress in Chicago, Ill., from 1941 to 1945, and was a teller for 38 years at Commercial State Bank in Cedar Bluffs before retiring in November of 1994.

On Sept. 8, 1946, she married Raymond E. Grosse at Arlington.

Mrs. Grosse was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, where she played the church organ for 38 years, sang in the choir, was a member of the Dorcas Society; and was a member of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and the Lutheran Laymen’s League. She was a member of the Cedar Bluffs Community Club and the American Legion Auxiliary of Post No. 158 of Cedar Bluffs for more than 50 years. She was a member of the 8 & 40 Salon No. 358 of Dodge County, and was a member of the guild of Concordia University at Seward.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Garlyn and Claire Grosse of Cedar Bluffs; sister and brother-in-law, Geraldine and Francis Tank of Fremont; and three grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond, in January 1999; and a brother, Dorwin “Speed” Wehmeyer.
