Raymond E. Grosse, 78, of Cedar Bluffs, whose wife was from Arlington, died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1999, at Methodist Hospital in Omaha.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church at Cedar Bluffs with the Rev. Ken Davidson officiating.

A prayer service is Friday at 7 p.m. at Moser Memorial Chapel in Cedar Bluffs.

Visitation continued Friday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Moser Chapel in Cedar Bluffs and at the church Saturday, one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery in Fremont with military services by the American Legion Post 158 of Cedar Bluffs.

Raymond E. Grosse was born Feb. 27, 1920, in Cedar Bluffs to Arthur H. and Magdalene (Harley) Grosse.

He grew up in Cedar Bluffs and graduated from Cedar Bluffs High School in 1937. He attended Concordia College in Seward for one year.

He began his banking career on Feb. 1, 1941, as a bookkeeper for Commercial state Bank at Cedar Bluffs.

He served in the U. S. Naval Submarine Service during World War II from Oct. 27, 1941, to Oct. 22, 1945, and served in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre.

Mr. Grosse returned to work at the bank and in 1949 became a cashier and served as senior bank officer. He later was elected bank president and served as a member of the board of directors. He had been in the banking business for more than 56 years.

On Sept. 8, 1946, he married Bernice E. Wehmeyer in Arlington.

Mr. Grosse was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church at Cedar Bluffs and served on all local church boards including the chairmanship of the church building committee in 1965. He served for eight years on the Nebraska District Board of Directors for the Lutheran Church. He was state officer of the Nebraska District Lutheran Laymen’s League for four years and served for many years as an officer and board member of Lutheran Family services.

He served on the Cedar Bluffs School Board for 30 years and on the City Council for many years, including service as mayor.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 158 at Cedar Bluffs since 1945, the American Legion Voiture 1018 of 0 & 8 of Fremont, V.F.W. Post 4502 of Wahoo and the Saunders County Veterans Board of Directors for 20 years.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice of Cedar Bluffs; one son and daughter-in-law, Garlyn and Claire Grosse of Huron, S. D.; two brothers-in-law, Victor Borgelt of Wisner and Harold Hormann of Omaha; one sister-in-law, Adeline Grosse of Lincoln; and three grandsons, Raymond, Michael and Gregory Grosse.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Harold Grosse; and two sisters, Mabel Hormann and Valeska Borgelt.

Memorials are suggested to St. Matthew Lutheran Church, The Lutheran Hour or Lutheran Family Services.

Moser Memorial Chapel in Cedar Bluffs is in charge of arrangements.
