Services Held For Hannah Lovisa Gummus

Hannah Lovisa (Ziegler) Gummus was born March 30, 1907, to Julius and Margaret (Petersen) Ziegler at the Rose Hill farm north of Orum in Washington County, Nebraska, and died Friday, July 27, 1984, at Clarkson Hospital, Omaha, Nebraska.

She graduated from Blair High School in 1925, later attended and graduated from Wayne State Teachers College. She taught school for many years in Washington, Burt, Stanton and Madison counties. Louise taught mostly during the era of the small country school when the teacher had to get there early on a cold winter morning to get the fire going. Her main concern, though, was the education for all the pupils in her charge, unmindful of the low pay for teachers those days.

It was while teaching in Stanton County that she met and later married Clarence Gummus on December 21, 1947, at Altoona, Iowa. Following their marriage they farmed north of Stanton in the Bega neighborhood.

Louise was interested in county and state government and community activities. She was also interested in horticulture, especially the growing of iris, mums, trees and garden plants. Her last project was the purchase and planting of several evergreen trees at the Bega Cemetery near their farm.

Louise was widely known for her fondness for collecting antiques.

She was a member of Elkhorn Valley Iris Society; Freelancer Writer’s Club, Stanton County Historical Society and attended the Stanton County Senior Citizens activities.

She was a very loving and devoted mother and grandmother.

Her husband Clarence preceded her in death in February 1982.

She is survived by two daughters, Sabra Boelter of Inman and Megan Gummus of Blair. Also surviving are her son-in-law, Robert Boelter and five grandchildren, Adrian, Justin, Brooke, Claire, and Kevin. Two sisters, Emma Martin of Indianola, Iowa, Marguerite Ziegler of Blair and brother, Bill Ziegler of Blair, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Lenora Walmsley, brother-in-law, Chester Gummus, both of Norfolk and brother-in-law, Ralph Martin of Indianola, Iowa; also by nieces, nephews and friends.

Note: On her tombstone, she is named Louise Gummus, wife of Clarence Gummus
