Caleb Lane died suddenly while engaged in a game of poker at Walthill. The Times, of that place, has a quite extended account of the occurrence and in describing the funeral service, says: “Rev. G.M. Pendell gave an appropriate discourse” and so forth. The question as to what constitutes “an appropriate discourse” at the obsequies of a man who falls dead grasping the winning hand in a poker game might arise in the minds of the readers of The Times’ account of the affair.
