Graham E. Daugherty, 71, of Logan, Iowa, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012, at Community Memorial Hospital in Missouri Valley.

Graveside services were Friday at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Van Meter with military rites provided by the United States Navy.

Graham Edward Daugherty was born Oct. 5, 1940, to John and Vera (Quigg) Daugherty in Cleveland, Ohio. He was raised in Cleveland and graduated from Rosewood High School in 1958.

After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy in September 1958.

He married Lois Everett in Carysville, Ohio, on Oct. 27, 1962.

He proudly served his country in Virginia; Okinawa, Japan; San Diego, Calif.; Cuba and Chicago, Ill. He served as a naval instructor at the U.S. Naval Training Center in Bainbridge, Md., where he was the senior fire control technician. He retired from the Navy in 1978.

He then worked as a general handyman for a few years, and in 1980, he became the general manager of CMI, Douglas Cable, New Path and Telepartners.

The couple moved to Logan, Iowa, in 1982. After 26 years in the cable industry, he retired in 2006.

He began a new career at Huntel in Blair as an electrical engineer and worked there for four years.

Mr. Daugherty loved his family and enjoyed watching his grandkids play sports. He was always coaching and teaching. Additionally, he enjoyed fishing, reading, working on houses and coaching baseball.

He liked to listen to country music. He also played in a band named the Country Crackers. He also loved to race go-karts and did this professionally.

He is survived by his wife, Lois of Logan; three children and their spouses, Karen and Tom Sluka of Milligan, Gail Daugherty of Omaha and Lee and Candace Daugherty of Santa Fe, Texas; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his brother, John; infant sister, Cheryl; and uncle, Kenneth Miley.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or the charity of the donor's choice.

Fouts Funeral Home in Woodbine, Iowa, was in charge of arrangements.
