World Herald 9 August 2012 Toddler found in pool at day care dies By Kevin Cole, World-Herald Staff Writer A toddler wandered into a backyard swimming pool at a Blair, Neb., home-based day care and was found unresponsive Wednesday in 4 feet of water. The 17-month-old girl was pronounced dead at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair. "This is one of those very sad incidents that makes you want to go home and hug your children," said Police Lt. Aaron Barrow of the apparent drowning death. Rescue workers were called to a home in the 2800 block of Sunrise Drive about 10:30 a.m. Barrow said the girl, whose name was not released, was found in an above-ground pool that is 4 feet deep and about 18 to 20 feet wide. He said police are investigating how she got into the pool, which is gated and connected to a deck on the house. "We're probably going to have to interview the other children that were present to find out how the girl got in the pool," Barrow said. "Right now, we just don't know the answer to that." The girl was among about six children at the day care. The facility was immediately closed. Barrow said the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services will determine when it's allowed to re-open. Marla Augustine, a spokeswoman for Health and Human Services, said the day care is licensed to provide care for up to 10 children between the ages of 6 weeks and 13 years old. She said one adult provider is required to watch the children. Barrow said that adult was there. He said no other children had been in the pool. An autopsy was to be done today in Douglas County.
