Dies At Daughter’s Home At Aurora, Illinois

Announcement of the death of Edwin Grenell was received by his old neighbors and friends at Fort Calhoun, where he had lived so many years, the first of the week, his death occurring at the home of his daughter at Aurora, Ill.

Deceased was one of the early residents of Fort Calhoun, his wife, long since dead, was the daughter of Col. George Stevens, another early resident of Fort Calhoun.

In the late sixties, deceased moved to Sarpy County where he operated the historic Sarpy Mill for a time and while residing there, in 1870, was elected to represent that county in the legislature. He later returned to this county and was elected as a delegate to represent this county in the constitutional convention. He was mayor of Fort Calhoun many years and held many other minor public offices.

The body was brought to Ft. Calhoun and the funeral services held there yesterday afternoon, Rev. A. E. Marsh, of this city officiating.

Two pioneers of Ft. Calhoun passed away last week, David Neale, whose death is recorded elsewhere in this issue, and E. N. Grennele, whose death occurred at the home of his daughter in Aurora, Ill. His body was brought to his old home in Ft. Calhoun for burial last Thursday. Rev. A. E. Marsh, of this city officiated, interment being under Masonic auspices, he being one of the oldest Masons in the state.

He was born in Michigan May 10th, 1828, and was therefore past 88 years old. He came to Omaha in ’56 and to De Soto in ’57. He was a member of the constitutional convention that framed the constitution under which we now live. He was many times elected mayor of Ft. Calhoun and was a prominent democratic politician union he got too old to attend conventions.

His wife died in 1885 and a daughter, Mrs. Henry Jipp, died in 1909, and his remains were laid to rest by their side.

He leaves seven children, all of whom are holding responsible positions in life. He had many friends in this city who note his demise with regret and who extend heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved children.

Edwin N. Grenelle, Section F Block 92 Grave 12.
