Alice Jensen Elwell, 90

Alice Jensen Elwell died in her sleep on June 23, 2001, in San Marcos, Calif., of congestive heart failure.

She was born on Sept. 28, 1910, on a farm north of Blair. Her parents were well-known early farmers, Ed and Amy Jensen. Following graduation from Blair High School, she attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, where she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. Following graduation from UNL, she taught high school English.

During World War II, she served in the United States Navy as a Wave. She moved to California after her discharge in 1946, and worked as a technical writer for McDonnell Douglas.

In 1953, she married William T. Elwell and they continued to live in California. She became proficient in oil painting and gardening and was known for her skill at the bridge table and writing prize winning essays.

She is survived by her husband, William, who is now living in a nursing home in Encinitas, Calif. She is also survived by her niece, Charlotte Rhoades Glinski, of California and four nephews, Kenneth Rhoades, Mick Jensen, Curtis Jensen, all of Blair, and John Jensen of Boulder, Colo.

Mrs. Elwell was preceded in death by her sister, Lucille Rhoades and brothers, Earl Jensen and Stanley Jensen.

A private memorial service will take place at the Blair Cemetery at a later date.
