Otto Gottsch, 99 Died At Blair Hospital May 5th

Otto Gottsch, son of Charles and Katherine (Jensen) Gottsch, was born April 9, 1877, on a farm north of Bennington where he lived his entire life. He died at the Blair Hospital on Wednesday morning, May 5, at the age of 99 years and 26 days.

The deceased was united in marriage to Anna Luschen on March 26, 1902. Eight children were born to this union.

Otto has been a life-time resident of the Bennington community. He farmed all his life on the farm which has been in the family since 1858. When he was eleven years old he became a member of the Hayes Cornet Band. In 1888, he also was very active in the Bennington Juvenile Military Band. He was a Charter member of the Plattdeutcher, a social benefit verein. Otto enjoyed a long life reasonably free from health problems until a short time ago. Even in his 90’s he was blessed with an alert mind and loved to relate the many historical events of the Bennington community.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna, who died in August of 1960; two sons, Leslie and Lawrence; and 1 infant daughter.

He is survived by 4 sons – Reinhardt, Wilfred and Roland of Bennington, and Donald of Neola, Iowa; one daughter – Mrs. M. C. (Gloria) Miller of Omaha; one granddaughter Mrs. Everett (Jacqulyn) Bishop of Fremont, Nebraska; a grandson, Leon Miller of Omaha; 6 great-grandchildren; 1 sister – Mrs. William (Amanda) Winterburn of Elkhorn, Nebraska, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

Services were held at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bennington on Friday, May 7, at 2:00 p.m., with Pastor Norman Schroeder officiating, Ken Sukraw was the soloist and sang “How Great Thou Art” and “The Old Rugged Cross”. Mrs. Henry Kniep was organist. Casket bearers were: Walter Winterburn, Harold Misfeldt, Arthur Gottsch, Arthur Schneekloth, Leonard Luschen and Richard Luschen. Interment was in the German Cemetery. The Hadan-Golden Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
