Died Of Typhoid Fever

Succumbing to typhoid fever which she contracted while nursing three patients back to health, Mrs. Mathilda Laaker, a nurse who has been making her home with Mr. and Mrs. Whitcomb, in Fremont, died at the hospital there shortly before noon Thursday. Mrs. Laaker had been ill about two weeks when the final summons came.

The deceased is a daughter of Wilham Krueger, who lives on the west side of the county. She was born in Washington county January 22, 1875. Her husband died at the Fremont hospital nine years ago and since that time she has devoted herself to caring for the sick.

Funeral services for Mrs. Laaker were held at the home of her mother, Mrs. Wilham Krueger five miles north of Arlington at 12 o’clock Sunday, Rev. von Hollornberg officiating. One hour later services were also held at the Lutheran church, being conducted by Rev. von Gemmingen of Fremont. A special feature of the service was the singing, by thirty children, of the beautiful German hymn, “Who Findet DieSeele Die Heimath der Fuh,” while the congregation vied the remains. It was one of the most largely attended funerals ever held in Washington county. The deceased leaves a mother, two brothers and three sisters.

The funeral of Mrs. Matilda Laaker whose death occurred at Fremont last week was held from the residence of her mother, Mrs. Hannah Kruger, living five miles northwest of Arlington, 12 o’clock Sunday, followed at 1 p.m. by services at the Lutheran church, at least 500 people being present to witness the impressive ceremony, Rev. Gemegen, of Fremont officiating. The deceased lady was born January 22, 1875, in the same house from which her lifeless body was taken last Sunday and consigned to mother earth, being now occupied by her mother and brother, F.C. Kruger. In 1897 she was married to Fred Laaker, who died in 1901, soon after whose death she turned her attention to trained nursing, and was a professional nurse at the time of her death, in which capacity she was very highly spoken of by her associates. She was a lovable disposition and made friends wherever she went, and was very popular in as well as out of the sick room. For some time she has been a sufferer from appendicitis and not being of robust health it was not thought best to operate on her, and when attacked some weeks ago by typhoid fever she fell an easy victim to that terrible disease. The large attendance at the funeral, especially as the day was not propitious, showed in what esteem she was held by her old neighbors and friends, who brought with them many tokens of affection in the shape of floral designs, two being worthy of especial mention, beautiful, floral pillows, one the gift of the nurses with whom Mrs. Laaker had associated, the other being the gift of her mother, brothers and sisters. The Review Herald unites with a host of friends in extending to the bereaved family of the deceased expressions of heartfelt sympathy in this, their hour of great bereavement.
