William R. Waters, 82

William R. Waters, 82, of Grand Island, died Monday, July 7, 2008, at St Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, July 11, at the Apfel Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Cedar-view Cemetery in Doniphan.

William “Bill” R. Waters was born June 26, 1926, in Weleestka, Okla., to Richard M. and Claudine (Turner) Waters. He received his education in Ringgold, Texas, graduating from Ringgold High School.

He entered the United States Navy on Jan. 7, 1944, serving in the South Pacific during World War II. He was honorably discharged May 22, 1946.

He married Darlene Schimmer on April 30, 1950, in Grand Island.

In January of 1951, the couple moved to Doniphan. He was employed at the Cairo, Doniphan & Trumbull grain elevators for a total of 42 years. He worked at the Turner Grain Company in Doniphan as manager from 1951 to 1979. He moved to Grand Island in October of 1988.

He was a member of American Legion Post No. 300, Grand Island VFW and the Platt Deutsche Society. He was retired from the Doniphan Fire Department. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and gardening.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Charlotte Waters of Hastings and James and Sandra Waters of Grand Island; three daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen and Roger LaFeber of Pardeeville, Wis., Patricia and Doug Barber of Blair, and Barbara Waters of Grand Island; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; special friend, Betty Barber of Grand Island; two sisters-in-law, Donna Peters and Rogene Toben, both of Grand Island, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene, and one brother, Julian.

Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church in Doniphan.
