Helen Hartung Engel, 91

Helen Hartung Engel, 91, of Fremont died Wednesday, October 13, 1999, at the A.J. Merrick Manor in Fremont.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, October 15, 1999, at the Trinity Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in Memorial Cemetery. Visitation at the Ludvigsen Mortuary will be on Thursday, October 14, from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. with family receiving friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

She was born Helen Mae Mahel on October 29, 1907, in rural Ames, Nebraska, to Joseph and Margaret 'Slemmer' Mahel. She attended the Hay Valley District #78 rural elementary school, and graduated from Fremont High School in 1925. Helen then attended the Midland College Commercial School. She worked for the "Old New York" Bakery for three years.

Helen Mahel was married to Obert Hartung on August 28, 1929, at their new home northeast of Fremont. They lived briefly in Fontanelle, then moved to the old Turner Ranch west of Fremont in 1937. Helen moved into Fremont in December of 1992.

Her husband Obert, died on December 4, 1968. On March 28, 1981, Helen was married in Columbus to Nicolas Engel Sr. He preceded her in death on November 3, 1986.

Helen was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Fremont, and its Ladies Aid and Bible Class. Active in Dodge County Extension work for 50 years (1931-'81) she was a member of the Riverview Extension Club. She was the Dodge County Extension Chairwoman in 1954-55, served on the Nebraska State Extension Board for one year, and was a 4-H Fair assistant for 20 years. Helen was a former member of the Fremont China Painters and the Memorial Hospital of Dodge County Auxiliary.

Survivors include a son, Del and his wife Norma Hartung of Fremont; a granddaughter, LeAnn and her husband Ken Karmann; a great-grandson, Morgan Karmann; a great-granddaughter, Nia Karmann; a granddaughter, Shara and her husband Roger Warner; a great-granddaughter, Amanda Hartung; grandson, Kent Hartung; a son Paul and his wife, Pat Hartung, of Fremont; a granddaughter, Kim and her husband Skip Polen; a great-granddaughter, Brandis and Kiley Polen; a step-son Nic Engel Jr., of Fremont; a step-daughter, Brenda Ekstrom of Bellingham, Washington; a sister, Gladys Sokolovsky of Fremont; and many nieces and nephews.

Also preceeding her in death were her parents and brother Edward Mahel.
