HOWARD LAUGHLIN, 86

Howard Laughlin, 86, of Herman, died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009, at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 4 at the Herman Legion Hall. Interment will be in the Herman Cemetery.

Howard Laughlin was born on Nov. 5, 1922, in Herman, to Charles and Lizzie Jane (Denney) Laughlin. He was a graduate of Herman High School.

He was drafted into the United States Army on Jan. 5, 1943. He served in northern France, central Europe, and the Rhineland Campaigns. He was wounded in a mortar attack on Sept. 20, 1944, and spent four months recovering in England before returning to his unit. He was discharged on Jan. 6, 1946.

After the war, he returned to Herman and worked for Chris Korshoj for three years. He farmed for eight years and then returned to the Korshoj Lumber Company working for Frank Korshoj for 30 years. He retired on May 1, 1986.

He enjoyed antiques, playing cards and loved the farm.

He was a member of the Herman American Legion and Herman Masonic Lodge.

He is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Patricia and Frank Weberg of Wausa, and Ada Bucy of San Rafael, Calif.; a son, Tom Laughlin of San Rafael, Calif.; stepdaughter and husband, Patricia and Keith Andersen of Herman; stepson and wife, Keith and Pam Wachter of Davenport, Iowa; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Marshall, second wife, Harriett Wilson Wachter; two sisters, Beulah Laughlin and Ethel Laughlin; and a brother, Robert Laughlin.

Memorials may be directed to the Herman Legion or Herman Fire and Rescue Squad.
