R. D. Zimmerman, Jr., 74, of Blair, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 1999, at Crowell Home. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Friday, Dec. 3, 1999. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, at First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Blair Cemetery.

R. D. Zimmerman was born Nov. 8, 1925, to Richard and Marcella (Ehernberger) Zimmerman in Kearney. He graduated from Blair High School in 1943. He was a faithful supporter of the First United Methodist Church for more than 50 years.

In February 1944, he entered the Navy and served in the military during WWII until his discharge in 1946. He received the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal, the Philippine Liberation Medal and the WWII Victory Medal.

After returning from the military, he attended Dana College and began working for the U.S. Postal Service from 1950 to 1983. He coached the American Legion Programs from 1950 to 1976 and was manager of the American Legion Club for many years. He was also past commander of the American Legion, served as city recreation chairman, served on the Blair Fire Department and was one of the owners of the Husker Bowl.

He was the recipient of the Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award in 1994 and also received the Blair Community School Foundation Distinguished Service Award. He was one of the strongest supporters of the Blair High School Athletic Programs and attended most of all the games home and away for many years, until his health would not allow him to travel. His strongest dedication in life was to serving the youth of the Blair community.

He is survived by two sisters and brothers-in-law, Joyce and Paul Robinson of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Marcelyn Lund of Blair; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Russell Lund. Memorials are suggested to the American Parkinson’s Disease Association or the First United Methodist Church. Campbell-Aman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
